Suffolk, VA History

The indigenous Nansemond tribe lived along the river before the English colonists arrived founding the city in 1742, cultivating tobacco, cotton, and other agricultural crops. Originally a port at Constant’s Wharf at the head of the river a harbor connected the area plantations to the Chesapeake Bay. Peanuts grown in the region have been a major industry for the city, with Planters Peanuts establishing its business in 1912.
